TOVA Test Cost for Clinicians: System, Credits, Hardware

For a clinician, the TOVA test cost has two parts: a one-time T.O.V.A. 9 system at $1,095, which includes the USB device, microswitch, manuals, and 5 test credits, plus $15 for each additional test credit (list prices on The TOVA Company’s website, accessed September 27, 2026). Spread across your first year, that works out to about $55.80 per test at 25 tests or $20.10 per test at 200, falling to $15 per test once the system is paid for. Below is what the price includes, what else you need, and how it compares with other options such as remote testing with AxonCPT.

What does the T.O.V.A. 9 system cost?

The TOVA Company’s online store lists [1]:

Item List price What’s included
T.O.V.A. 9 System $1,095 Visual and auditory T.O.V.A. tests, T.O.V.A. USB device, microswitch, Installation Guide, User’s Manual, Clinical Manual, installation USB flash drive, 5 test credits, and USB, VGA, and audio cables
T.O.V.A. 9 System Upgrade $695 For T.O.V.A. 7 or 8 users; old hardware must be returned within 45 days, and remaining credits carry over
Additional microswitch $249
Additional flash drive $29.95

The store says products are sold in Australia, Canada, EU countries, and the United States, with prices in USD, and orders are placed by emailing a completed PDF order form [1]. Shipping costs aren’t listed.

How much is each TOVA test credit?

“A T.O.V.A. test credit is US$15.00, with discounts for bulk orders. Prices are subject to change” [2]. Key terms from the vendor’s credit pages [2][3]:

  • One credit per test. “A test credit is spent when a test session is saved from the T.O.V.A. USB device to your T.O.V.A. computer.”
  • Ordering. Registered users can order credits in the T.O.V.A. application; the manual order form has a 5-credit minimum.
  • Billing. Credit orders are invoiced weekly, with 20 days to pay.
  • Bulk discounts are available through a bulk order form. The rates aren’t shown on the pages we reviewed, so the figures below use $15.
  • Expiry isn’t addressed on the pages we reviewed. Ask the vendor.

TOVA cost per test by volume

Assumptions: a new T.O.V.A. 9 system, list prices only, no bulk discount, tax, shipping, or computer cost. The 5 included credits cover the first 5 tests.

Tests in year one Arithmetic Year-one list cost Per test
25 $1,095 + 20 × $15 $1,395 $55.80
50 $1,095 + 45 × $15 $1,770 $35.40
100 $1,095 + 95 × $15 $2,520 $25.20
200 $1,095 + 195 × $15 $4,020 $20.10
Year two onward Credits only Tests × $15 $15.00

The system is a fixed cost, so TOVA gets cheaper per test the more you use it. For a practice that already owns a system, the relevant number is the marginal $15 per credit, or less with bulk pricing. A five-test titration course (baseline plus four follow-ups, an illustrative assumption) is 5 × $15 = $75 in credits.

What hardware and setup does TOVA need?

The T.O.V.A. runs on your computer with the vendor’s USB device and microswitch. The computer requirements page lists [4]:

  • Windows 7, 8, 10, or 11 (not 11 SE; Windows in “S mode” must be switched), or a Mac running OS X 10.8.5 or newer
  • x86-64 processor at 1 GHz or better, 2 GB RAM, 2 GB free disk space
  • A 10-inch or larger display at 1024 × 768 or higher
  • A USB Type A port (or Type C with an adapter), and the computer plugged into power during testing
  • Not compatible with Chromebooks, iPads, or Android devices

The TOVA Company describes its microswitch as “highly accurate (±1 ms)” [5]. Both the visual and auditory tests are 21.6 minutes long, with a 10.8-minute visual test for ages 4 to 5.5 [5]. The visual test covers ages 4 to 80+ and the auditory test ages 6 to 29 [5].

Time is a cost too. At 21.6 minutes of testing plus setup and instructions, each test uses a room and usually a staff member’s time. We didn’t find a remote or at-home administration option on the vendor pages we reviewed, so each test in a telehealth practice also means an in-person visit. How TOVA’s cost compares

List prices on each vendor’s website, accessed September 27, 2026. Year one assumes 50 tests (for example, 10 patients tested five times each).

Product Pricing model Year one, 50 tests Arithmetic
T.O.V.A. 9 $1,095 system + $15/credit [1][2] $1,770 $1,095 + 45 × $15
Conners CPT 3 Online $10 per use, minimum 15 [6] $500 50 × $10
IVA-2 Standard kit $975 (5 tests) + $825 per 50-test pack [7] $1,800 tests only $975 + $825
QbCheck From $68 per test [8] From $3,400 50 × $68
AxonCPT $49 for 5, $149 for 20, $79/month unlimited, or 2 free tests a month [9] $396 with packs 2 × $149 + 2 × $49

These figures cover the test only. They don’t reflect differences in age ranges, modalities, norms, research base, or setting, which matter as much as price. For the full cross-vendor picture, see what objective ADHD testing costs clinicians.

Regulatory status and billing

FDA’s 510(k) database lists T.O.V.A. Version 9.0 under K170082 (May 17, 2017) and T.O.V.A. under K173915 (March 22, 2018), product code LQD [10]. AxonCPT is not marketed as an FDA-cleared device; it describes itself as objective measurement to supplement clinical judgement.

The TOVA pages we reviewed don’t list billing codes. Coding a single computerized test depends on how it was administered and what else was done, so see our guide to the CPT code for TOVA, Conners CPT 3, and QbCheck and confirm with each payer.

When TOVA may fit better

  • You evaluate preschoolers. T.O.V.A. publishes a 10.8-minute visual test for ages 4 to 5.5.
  • You want an auditory CPT (ages 6 to 29 per the vendor).
  • You test in person and want a dedicated hardware response device, which the vendor describes as accurate to ±1 ms.
  • You already own a T.O.V.A. 7 or 8. The $695 upgrade carries remaining credits over.
  • You need an FDA 510(k)-cleared product for institutional or payer reasons.
  • Your reports or referral partners expect T.O.V.A. results specifically.

How this looks in practice

For a practice deciding between an in-office system and a remote test:

  1. Count your in-person slots. If most ADHD follow-ups are telehealth, estimate how many extra office visits an in-clinic test adds.
  2. Price your real volume using the table above, including any computer you’d dedicate to testing.
  3. Pilot a remote option in parallel. With AxonCPT, you send a link, the patient completes a ~16-minute test at home on a phone, tablet, or computer with no app or login, and the report is ready when they finish. See what the report looks like.
  4. Interpret any CPT alongside the interview and rating scales. A 2024 systematic review found limited diagnostic utility for CPTs, including T.O.V.A., in adults used alone, and concluded they may help as part of a comprehensive assessment [11].

For a wider look at remote-capable options, read best remote ADHD tests for telehealth. For how T.O.V.A. compares with Conners CPT 3, QbCheck, and IVA-2 on setting, ages, and FDA status, see our full CPT comparison, or read a direct, feature-by-feature comparison in AxonCPT vs. TOVA.

Frequently asked questions

How much does the TOVA test cost a clinician? The T.O.V.A. 9 system is $1,095 including 5 test credits, and extra credits are $15 each with bulk discounts available (list prices accessed September 27, 2026).

Is the TOVA a one-time purchase? The system is a one-time purchase, but each test uses a $15 credit. Additional microswitches ($249) and flash drives ($29.95) are sold separately.

Can the TOVA be given remotely? We found no remote administration option on The TOVA Company’s pages. The system requires its USB device connected to a Windows or Mac computer.

Why do patients pay more than $15 for a TOVA? A clinic’s patient fee usually covers clinician time, administration, interpretation, and feedback, not just the credit.
